Vantage Group appoints former AIG legal chief

Vantage Group announced that Lucy Fato will take over as general counsel, succeeding Bobbi Anderson in the senior legal role.

New legal chief brings decades of insurance expertise

Fato steps into a position that oversees the legal department and sits on the executive team, where she will advise executive chairman Marc Grandisson on strategic matters. The appointment follows her brief tenure as chief legal officer at Seaport Entertainment Group, a hospitality and entertainment firm that spun out of Howard Hughes last year.

Her résumé includes more than thirty years of work in legal, compliance and regulatory affairs within insurance and financial services. Prior to Seaport, she spent six years as general counsel at AIG, guiding the global insurer through a period of restructuring and litigation.

Background of the insurer and its recent ownership change

The Bermuda‑based specialty insurer was bought in June by Howard Hughes Holdings, a vehicle backed by Pershing Square and led by hedge‑fund billionaire Bill Ackman. The transaction valued the business at roughly $2.1 billion, ending previous ownership by Carlyle and Hellman & Friedman.

Grandisson said, “Lucy is a proven leader with a track record of guiding our industry’s most respected companies through growth and transformation, and her judgement across complex legal and regulatory matters will be a tremendous asset to us.” The comment shows the firm’s focus on long‑term value creation.

Before joining Seaport, Fato served as chief legal officer and head of Americas for Nardello & Co, a corporate investigations firm, and held a senior legal role at S&P Global, the financial data and analytics company.

Her career began at Marsh McLennan, where she was deputy general counsel and corporate secretary. Earlier, she spent fourteen years at Davis Polk & Wardwell, including five as a partner in the capital‑markets practice.

“I am thrilled to join Vantage at such a key moment and to be able to continue working with the leadership teams at Howard Hughes Holdings and Pershing Square as we look to the exciting future of Vantage,” Fato said. “The company has an innovative and distinctive approach and I look forward to partnering with Marc and the entire team at Vantage to support our next chapter of growth.”

Bobbi Anderson, who held the chief legal officer title for almost six years, will step down. She previously served as general counsel at Elementum Advisors and was a partner at Sidley Austin before entering the insurance sector.

Comparing this move to past leadership changes at large insurers shows a pattern: firms often bring in seasoned lawyers from other financial services firms to steer regulatory challenges. The practice mirrors AIG’s own hiring of external counsel during its post‑crisis restructuring, suggesting the insurer values outside perspectives to handle complex markets.

Howard Hughes, chaired by Ackman, has been active in reshaping its portfolio since acquiring the insurer. The new legal head will likely play a role in any future transactions the firm pursues, given the strategic emphasis on growth.

Other recent hires in the sector include Hadron’s appointment of Liesel Carvajal as group general counsel, moving from AXA XL where she led the U.S. insurance business. Such moves reflect broader talent shifts among insurers seeking experienced legal leadership.
